- Bloomberg BusinessWeek has published a must-read story about a man who was being hounded by collectors for debts he did not owe. But rather than make payments or just stop answering the phone, the man started digging. And he ended up digging all the way until he found Joel Tucker. Tucker, and his brother Scott, have gotten into a lot of trouble for selling fake portfolios of debts that have been attempted to be collected by a lot of different individuals.
BILL ALLOWING MICHIGAN AGENCIES TO EMPLOY LAWYERS ON SITE PASSES
- Both houses of the Michigan legislature have approved a bill that will allow collection agencies to now employ lawyers in their offices. The bill is headed to Gov. Rick Snyder’s office for his signature to become law. He has 14 days to sign or veto the legislation. The state Senate approved the bill unanimously earlier this year. The state House of Representatives approved the bill 94-13 last week.
CORDRAY ANNOUNCES RUN TO BE NEXT GOVERNOR OF OHIO
- Richard Cordray, the former director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, formally entered the race to be the next governor of Ohio yesterday. Cordray, a former attorney general for the Buckeye State, had been rumored to be mulling a run for governor for several months.
MICK MULVANEY, LEANDRA ENGLISH HAVE YET TO MEET
- Mick Mulvaney, the acting director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, says he has yet to speak with Leandra English, who is still fighting to be the acting director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Mulvaney says he has sent some emails to English, including one directing her to stop using the title “acting director” when communicating with employees at the agency. Mulvaney also said he has no plans to fire English, who is suing for the right to be named acting director.
BILL INTRODUCED IN CONGRESS TO AMEND FDCPA
- Rep. Vincente Gonzalez [D-Texas], a member of the House Financial Services Committee, yesterday introduced legislation in the House of Representatives that would amend the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
