DID CORDRAY BLUFF HIS WAY TO STAYING AT THE CFPB?
- Maybe he should leave government and become a professional poker player because he may have pulled the biggest bluff of the year. A published report infers that Richard Cordray, the director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, used the possibility of leaving office to run for governor of Ohio as a smokescreen to keep President Trump from firing him. The president has not fired Cordray, according to some reports, because it would bolster his candidacy should he choose to run.
FOCUS DEEPENS ON CHARGING COLLECTION FEES FOR UNPAID COURT COSTS
- More attention is being focused on the fees charged by collection agencies when working on behalf of governments and state legal services. This time it’s in Iowa, where one-third of the state’s 99 counties outsource collections to a third-party firm, which charges a 25% fee on everything it collects. Calling the collection fee a “poor tax,” because it is effectively charged to those who are unable to pay their debts, consumer advocates are fighting to bring attention to the situation across the country.
MICHIGAN MOVES CLOSER TO ALLOWING AGENCIES TO EMPLOYE ATTORNEYS ON SITE
- The state of Michigan has moved one step closer to allowing collection agencies to employe attorneys inside their offices. A committee in the Michigan House of Representatives unanimously approved a bill yesterday that would allow agencies to employ an on-site attorney. The state Senate has already approved the measure, which now goes to the full House for a vote early next month.
