AGENCY EVACUATED AFTER BOMB HOAX

  • Professional Credit Service, a collection agency in Eugene, Oregon, was closed for four hours yesterday after an employee on a break saw what looked to be an explosive device. While the device turned out to be a fake — two road flares taped together with a digital recorder — the bomb squad was called in and two robots were used in investigating the device. A spokesman for the local police department said the agency had terminated a number of employees recently and that could be the motive for the hoax. The president of the agency said that the terminations were performance-related.

CFPB UNVEILS SMALL-DOLLAR LOAN RULE

  • The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau yesterday unveiled its small-dollar loan rule, aimed directly at the payday lending market. The rule, which is scheduled to go into effect in 2019, would place a number of restrictions on lenders, including a requirement to determine whether a borrower can repay a loan in full and still meet their other living and financial obligations. Critics of the rule are vowing to sue the CFPB to keep the rule from going into effect while payday lenders say the rule will likely force them to go out of business.
