JUSTICE DEPARTMENT CONFIRMS TERMINATION OF OPERATION CHOKE POINT
- The Justice Department has admitted that Operation Choke Point was “a misguided initiative,” and has pledged that the government will not keep lawful businesses from access to financial services, according to a letter the assistant Attorney General sent late last week. The letter was a response to an inquiry from the House Judiciary and Financial Services Committees asking for a formal renouncement of the plan.

- A company with ties to presidential advisor Jared Kushner is in the spotlight for its aggressive debt collection practices. The company, Kushner Companies, is allegedly the “most aggressive” company in Maryland for using judges to arrest individuals who have not paid their rent. The company also allegedly does not allow individuals to pay their rent with money orders, requiring people without bank accounts to go to a Walmart or other “cash express company” to make payments.
COLLECTION AGENCY ACCIDENTALLY SENDS OUT LETTERS TO PATIENTS
- About 10,000 former patients at MaineGeneral Medical Center received collection letters from a collections agency saying they owed money, when in fact they did not. The letters were sent out as a result of a “technical” error.
