MAKING IT RAIN
- The water company in San Angelo, Texas, is asking the city council for approval to hire a collection agency to go after $3 million in unpaid water bills. The utility is currently sending out collection letters to customers with past-due accounts.
KEEP ON TRUCKIN’
- The state of Washington is considering legislation that would create a payment program for individuals who are not able to pay traffic fines in full. In Washington, that can lead to suspension of an individual’s drivers license, which can be especially problematic on low-income families. Nearly 400,000 Washingtonians currently have their licenses suspended, many of those because of failure to pay traffic fines.
SUING FOR LESS THAN THE PRICE OF A PIZZA
- An Illinois woman is suing Asset Recovery Systems because the agency kept trying to collect $11.71 more than the amount that was cited in the original collection letter. The original collection letter said the past due balance was $464, but the agency allegedly kept trying to collect $465.71 and the woman says she was never notified that interest would accrue on the balance.
DON’T HANG UP THE PHONE
- A lawyer weighs in on the “absurdity” of a bill in the Pennsylvania legislature that would limit the number of times a debt collector can contact a customer. There has been no movement or progress on the proposed legislation, which was introduced late last year.
